It's a screw on to 1.4 adapter...so are those drilled 3 bolt Altec 1.4? Look to be also 4 bolt EV pattern.

I think those are HR-60's.

Looking at the EV spec sheets and the sellers measurements, that's correct....... which also means my HR90* is actually a 60. The 60 and 90 are actually fairly close in size, but the 90 looks more like my 120 in design, according to the drawings. I feel a bit embarrassed since now that I look at the horn and spec sheets, and see that the 60 and 90 degree angles are pretty obvious.

Can someone tell me why all the drivers seem to be screw on, and the horns are bolt on? I was looking at EV drivers on Ebay other other day and they all seem to be screw on. I was hoping to try out my HR horns after meeting Don Keele.

*Okay at one point I knew I had a 60 because I found where I was trying to sell it, and called it by it's correct model name.

My WAG is that's simply the standard they(EV) chose for small format mounting, the 1-3/8 x 18 thread is pretty much their standard like the 2 bolt Altec standard, and 3 bolt jbl standard for small format.

If we go back on the timeline, for a long time, the 6HD and 8HD were pretty much the only horns they offered aside from those re-entrant contraptions they used in the Georgian and Patrician. 8HD has been used by several other companies over the years too, lotta those suckers out there.

Well, those HR horns are 1 .29/1.3" horns, not a 1" so are they small format? I can understand a company making a choice on configuration, but I don't get making the drivers one way and the horns another.

Re the horns in the OP, the flanges on the horns and throat are large format, and appear to be drilled for the two most common patterns, the 1.3/1.4 inch 3 bolt pattern which includes large format Altec, and the 4 bolt 2 inch throat pattern common for EV and JBL as well as others. The 1-3/8 x 18 thread mount is on the same flange of the adapters as the 2 and 3 bolt small format patterns.

Personally, i wouldn't use "those" adapters for bolt on drivers with true 1 inch throats. That land that is the blind bottom of the 1/3/8 threaded portion is a large reflective area that will direct HF energy directly back into the driver. Those adapters are best suited for use with threaded drivers.

EV did not make large format Drivers till the MF-1012 for Kustom mid to late 70's. Later sold as EV DH-1012 and Altec 906. Later a snout was added essentially a 1.4 to 2 inch adapter cast on, to create THE DH1a.

EV, Atlas, University- the 'second tier" manufacturers all used 1 3/8 screw on for small format.. Later Heppner, Gollehon , Cerwin Vega and others used that.

That horn was designed for the above mentioned Kustom/EV/Altec driver, had to have the adapter for the small format driver.

Does the snout function as simply a spacer/adapter, or does it play a role in the electromagnetics of the motor?

I've never thought of EV as being second tier. The era we're discussing is before my time, Though.

EV was second tier traditionally. Closing down Altec and absorbing some products helped.

Old EV 15 woofs are JUNK compared to Altecs or JBL.

Politics of the time, JBL courted George Lucas, and got THX specs to call for a 2 inch driver. Since been changed.Ev just molded the adapter on. Actually it likely hurts the mag field.

Ev made a driver to fit that horn as I explained. EV throats are bigger than you suggest. I never heard of 1.29 and the 1.3 is actually about 1.37.
